At a time when Columbus
first stumbled on America,
Lorenzo’s son, Piero,
ordained that Michelangelo
shape a body out of snow.
That snowman was, Vasari said,
the most beautiful ever made.
Formed by master fingers,
unstained by Tuscan blood,
it grew on pure Apennine slopes
with lords of Florence watching.
The master found an essence
awaiting its discovery
which then Vasari’s pen
graced with transient permanence,
in the Tuscan melting sun.
