If you regret you did not open
the many doors you knocked on,
reproach yourself for that regret,
some doors are mere illusion.
Life's corridor does not afford
the choice you told yourself it did -
some doors are mirrors, some a window.
But do not lose the knowledge of
the locks your keys have turned in.
And when you drag some heavy gate
to shut a muddy field, remember:
kissing gate and latch let you
but no farm animal through.
So dwell on doors you passed beyond
or opened into yard or field.
The telling reasons for refusing
to turn a certain key may not
have been your own, but others' choosing.
